Club Mission

Alzheimer’s Buddies is a student group at the University of Pennsylvania that pairs members with nursing home residents experiencing dementia in an attempt to alleviate the often-overlooked emotional and social challenges that stem from Alzheimer’s disease and related afflictions. Members visit their paired residents weekly and often develop close, meaningful relationships with them.

Question: Is the nursing home within walking distance? How long does it take to get there? - Anonymous
The nursing home we're currently partnered with is about a 20 minute walk or a 5-10 minute SEPTA/Uber ride away. A majority of our funding goes to reimbursing our members for transportation to the nursing home, so there is no out-of-pocket expense for members to SEPTA to the nursing home.

How to Get Involved

Our applications for Fall 2024 are currently closed. Please check back in Spring 2025 for our spring application cycle!

Members are expected to visit their buddy at Saint Ignatius Nursing Home once a week for an hour, not counting certain weekends such as fall/spring break or after reading days. They are expected to attend monthly reflection meetings, and participate in our invited guest lectures and fundraisers. A member in good standing has done most, if not all, their weekly visits and attended most reflection meetings. Attendance in at least one fundraiser or speaker lecture is necessary in order to remain in good standing and doing both can help them make up for missing a visit or reflecting meeting.
