The purpose of this club is to provide a platform for students interested in Intellectual Property (IP) law at Penn.
Many clubs and courses provide guidance for pre-law students, however there is often a focus on criminal and corporate law. The emerging field of IP law remains unexplored. IP Law is a rapidly expanding industry. It is one that will continue to increase in relevance as the digital world expands and more require patents, copyrights, and trademarks. Therefore, this club would provide an important platform for students interested in IP law to connect, seek and provide guidance and professional support. The club will also have an awareness-building function as the events and activities will show members of the Penn community with interest in law that this field is one that exists, thrives, and is accessible.
The club will organize events such as summits and networking events where Penn alumni and other leaders in this industry will interact with students. In this way the club will provide an opportunity for students to connect with people involved in entertainment and sports law, companies requiring patents, and trademarking in the music industry. Further, the club will connect and aid its members with internships, courses of interest, and mentorship. The club will also allow its members to develop experiential knowledge as we include a “consulting” arm. As a consultant in the IP law club, a student can help student entrepreneurs or social impact organizations gather information about patents, copyrights, trademarks, and/or other IP Law concerns.
We hope to create a relationship with similar societies at the Carey Law School such as the “Entertainment and Sports Law Society” and “Penn Intentional Property Group,: and receive mentorship from professors like Professor Amanda Shanor and
