iNtuitons Experimental Theatre

Description

iNtuitons Experimental Theatre is the University of Pennsylvania's only student-run experimental theatre group. iNtuitons comes from two words: intuition and automaton. The group was chartered to "attract people with diverse artistic interests and in order to provide an outlet for creative people whose ideas are too Classical or Avant-Garde to be supported by existing groups."

Each year we present a student-directed mainstage production in the fall and spring, our annual Alternative Theatre Festival featuring student submissions (part of Philly FringeArts Festival), plus participating in the Theatre Arts Council's One Acts Festival each winter. We've also had bonus shows (winter & spring), play-readings of original work by Philadelphia artists, and guerilla theatre experiments (Example here).

Our "taste" is broad in scope. iNtuitons has produced work by such diverse writers as Vaclav Havel, Sarah Kane, Euripides, Joseph Conrad, Sam Shepard, Milan Kundera, Caryl Churchill... just to name a few.

Question: How is your club's programming adjusting to a virtual format? - Anonymous
Our Alternative Theatre Festival on September 12th is our first production of the year. Usually it’s done in Platt House as part of Philly Fringe Festival. This year we have moved it online. It is virtually streaming on YouTube still as part of Philly Fringe (it is also free for new students so do look out for more info). We’ve moved rehearsals, designer meetings and more online to accommodate our members all over the world and the restrictions due to the pandemic. Our Fall Show we are considering changing our show format to better fit and experiment with the virtual performance space. In terms of connecting with people and our own board members. It has been an adjustment to the virtual format. We’ve really leaned into our social media as a way to express our mission and connect with people we can no longer see walking around campus or on Locust Walk. We pride ourselves on fun social events. We’ve pivoted from bowling, craft, and bad movie nights, as well as production staff brunches. Now we do online game nights, movie night (with Houseparty recap conversations after!), and bring your own brunch zoom parties.

How to Get Involved

Production staff or cast for a show: Audition for a performing role in the cast or interview for a technical role on the prod staff! We hold auditions/interviews three times a year (Fall, Winter, Spring) with the rest of the TAC-e groups. Reach out to any board member about how to get involved and stay updated on our socials!

Board member: We hold board elections every spring (~March)! Attend board meetings, pick the shows we put up for our upcoming seasons, get involved as a producer, and help make theatre experimental!
