Description

Since 1889, Mask and Wig has been a musical theater comedy group made up of a Cast, Crew, Business Staff, and Band! The Club's primary purpose has always been and continues to be, "Justice to the stage and credit to the University" which we uphold through our Fall sketch comedy show and Spring original book musical! Today, Mask and Wig maintains its position as one of the premier extracurricular activities on the Penn campus, with a community that lasts for a lifetime. The Club goes on tour annually over spring break bringing the show to alumni clubs across the world. Recent locations for this free-to-members spring break trip include New York, Los Angeles, and London. Still not convinced? Visit our Center-City clubhouse and theater, or our private clubroom in the Quad! We hope to meet you at auditions or a show very soon!

We are extremely excited to invite all students, regardless of gender identity, to audition!

Question: Do I have to be on stage? - Anonymous

If you join the Cast: yup! don’t forget to smile!

If you join the Band: it depends. for shows, you can kinda just sit and chill while for gigs, it's more like playing a concert.

If you join Biz or Crew: you don’t have to be on stage if you don't want to.

Question: Can I apply for more than one section? - Anonymous

Yes! You can apply for as many sections as you would like, but you will only be selected for one section.

While you will only be in one section, there are still opportunities to work with other sections. For example: You may be selected for the Cast who you will spend most of your time with, but you will still have the opportunity to help the Crew build the set. Alternatively, you may be in the Crew and will still get the chance to help the Cast write the shows! To understand what section might be best for you, we encourage you to come to our NSO events and ask current members what their experiences have been like.

Question: How do auditions work? - Anonymous

Auditions will be held on September 4th, 2023 in Houston Hall. We encourage you to come to our Free Show on September 1st to see what we do and hear from all of our sections about their individual work. You will arrive and fill out a written application for each section you wish to apply for (Cast/Band/Crew/Business Staff) and you can apply for 1 or many. Each section’s audition process looks different ranging from scene and dance auditions for the cast, to an interview for the Business Staff. The best way to figure out what to expect is to follow our social media accounts, show up to our NSO events, and ask current members what their auditions looked like!

Question: How does the application process work? - Anonymous

Our application process is an in-person “audition.” Please show up to Houston Hall on September 4th, 2023 where members of the company will help you through the process. You will complete a written application and section specific in-person auditions depending on which section(s) you apply for. Decisions will be made the same day! If you cannot make it to in person auditions on September 4th, we encourage you to reach out to ugexec@maskandwig.com and we will do our best to accommodate you!

Question: What is the time commitment like? - Anonymous

Mask and Wig is half a theatre group, half a social group.

For the theatre half:

Mask and Wig has two productions: an original sketch comedy show in the Fall and an original book musical in the Spring. Mask and Wig’s time commitment is reflective of the time that it would take to put on any production of a similar scale. If you’ve ever been involved with a musical production, you can expect a similar amount of commitment.

For the social half:

Mask and Wig has just under 50 members, all with diverse backgrounds, interests, and personalities. A large amount of your time in Wig will be interacting, having fun, and making memories with these amazing people. This social commitment involves 135-year old traditions and fresh social events that we can’t wait for you to experience. Additionally, one of our biggest time commitments is our expenses-paid Tour over Spring Break where we travel to multiple cities as a group. Fond memories have included performing sold-out shows in New York City, climbing Mount Royale in Montréal, and yachting on a 50-foot catamaran in Cancun. The best part is we get to do it all together!
