Description

We are Penn's first and only student organization for American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. We host activities for novices who are just curious about sign language, practice signing sessions for people of all ASL levels to increase their fluency, and plan many opportunities to educate our campus about Deaf culture. Deaf, hearing, and all levels of signing ability are welcome!

See this document for upcoming events (updated by PiH members and ASL students throughout the semester)!

Question: How can I get involved with the club? How will I know when Penn in Hand is holding events? - Anonymous

Getting Involved: There are many ways to get involved. First, definitely sign up for club updates and join our events! If you'd like to help volunteer at any events, or if you have any suggestions/ideas of your own, we would love to work with you, and you can reach out on one of our social media platforms, or email the President directly (mirzam@sas.upenn.edu)! If you have any questions about ASL classes at Penn, we'd love to connect you to more students/teachers as well.

Question: I know the description and FaceBook mention that all levels of signing are welcome, but will there be sessions for individuals who are inexperienced with sign language, or are members expected to pick up sign language independently? - Anonymous

Hello and thanks for your question! We mean exactly that when we say all levels of signing are welcome - we host various events where you can come and practice signing with us in a conversational setting. We also host semesterly "Crash Course ASL" events for people with no experience who want to learn sign language basics and ask questions about ASL and Deaf Culture! Penn does offer introductory ASL classes as well, and we'd love to share more on that subject if you're curious. To start, check out the ASL and Deaf Studies Program at Penn

How to Get Involved

This club is open to anyone interested in learning about American Sign Language and Deaf Culture! We welcome members of all signing abilities, and host a variety of events to cater to signing novices and advanced ASL students. Some of our members have no familiarity with ASL but want to learn, some have a beginner fluency from watching YouTube lessons, and many of our members are curret or former ASL students. Students taking ASL at Penn frequently use the Penn In Hand events to practice their signing skills and complete class assignments.

We do not have an event-quota or any strict membership requirements. All members of the club are in good standing regardless of how many events they attend.

We will be active at the SAC fair and can be reached at the PiH email, or emailing the Co-presidents (Morgan, mdelizia@sas.upenn.edu, and Madeeha, mirzam@sas.upenn.edu) directly if you have any questions or would like to apply for a position on Board (we have several positions open, and would love to have more students involved!)
