Lifestyle Medicine is the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic interventions to prevent, treat, and even reverse chronic disease. Common conditions that can particularly benefit from Lifestyle Medicine include hypertension, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and multiple types of cancer. According to the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM), the six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine include nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, restorative sleep, social connectivity, and avoidance of risky substances. Our LMIG hosts one event per month (frequently providing food at our events) and educates students on the intersection between Lifestyle Medicine and a wide variety of different specialties in order to offer students practical advice on how to incorporate Lifestyle Medicine into any field they may want to pursue. In addition, we plan to develop a Lifestyle Medicine Newsletter this semester that highlights advancements in Lifestyle Medicine research, current hot topics in Lifestyle Medicine, community outreach programs in Lifestyle Medicine, and prominent Lifestyle Medicine physicians. Finally, we will also be creating Penn-specific resources to help other students get involved with Lifestyle Medicine at both the undergraduate and medical student levels.
