Description

The Pennalizers is the research-oriented RoboCup team at the University of Pennsylvania. We participate in domestic and international robot soccer robocups every year. We do research to advance our skills and knowledge in robotics under the supervision of Dr. Camillo J. ("CJ") Taylor , in affiliation with General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Laboratory at the Penn.

Question: How big are the sub-teams usually (Vision, Locomotion, Localization, etc.)? And if we filled out an application, when can we expect to hear back? - Anonymous

There is no set number of people for each sub-team. Work will be planned and distributed based on the level of time commitment and interest offered by each member. Ideally, each member will have a
programming partner so that they can brainstorm and debug together. In terms of hearing back on the application, I would expect a response prior to the Info Session date or by the end of September whichever comes first.

Question: I noticed that the application asked about summer commitments. Are members expected to spend their summer on robotics research? - Anonymous
Nope! This is just for us to know a person's availability when it comes to forming our RoboCup team. RoboCup takes place during late June this year in Bordeaux, France. You are welcome to join the team and not take part in the summer competition.

Question: What are some of the things a mechanical engineer do on the team? It looks like it's more programming focused. Thanks! - Anonymous
Our locomotion team and single robot behavior team are heavily reliant on mechanical engineering principles. Yes, there is a large programming aspect to it, but most of our mechanical engineers look at robot analysis (using matlab to analyze robot motions/center of mass) and how to dynamically manipulate motors to get the robots to perform specific actions. Projects in the past have included key-framing robot get-up routines (check out https://fling.seas.upenn.edu/~robocup/files/2019Poster.pdf) for new members and writing dynamic stabilization algorithms to allow the robot to walk while being pushed by other robots for more experienced members (check out section 4 here https://fling.seas.upenn.edu/~robocup/files/2015Report.pdf). Our team currently has a number of mechanical engineers on both the R&D team and the Management team!

Question: How much programming is required to be a part of this ? Is it okay to apply with no prior experience in robotics ? - Anonymous
We are accepting people of all backgrounds who are motivated to learn the skills needed to succeed. So it is totally ok to apply with no prior experience!
