Description

For over 75 years, the Pennsylvania Players have been bringing theater to the University of Pennsylvania. Since 1936, Penn Players has offered a creative outlet to a wide variety of students, including actors, singers, dancers, musicians, designers (scenic, lighting, costumes, properties), producers, stage managers, and others. With the guidance of professional directors (and musical directors for our musicals), Penn Players produces two major shows each year, a musical in the fall and a drama in the spring, in the Harold Prince Theater of the Annenberg Center. Additionally, Players co-produces (with the other organizations of the Penn Theatre Arts Council) the student-directed one-acts festival in January to give first-time student directors and playwrights a chance to gain experience. Involvement with Penn Players is open to the entire University student community. All students (undergraduate, graduate, and LPS) are invited to audition, interview for staff/design positions, and participate in any of the production crews (sets, lights, costumes, running crews, etc.). All Penn students working on a Penn Players show are eligible to vote and run for the Penn Players Board of Governors during the next election. The Board is responsible for soliciting show proposals, choosing shows, hiring directors, and interviewing and selecting production staffs for all Penn Players productions. The Board also stays in contact with the Penn Players Alumni Club, keeps track of Penn Players membership, and creates and manages an annual budget. Penn Players is a SAC (Student Activities Council) Funded Organization. We are a member of PAC (Performing Arts Council), and part of the TAC~E (Theater) division. SAC is part of OSL.

Question: What does the usual commitment look like for an actor in one of your shows? I was wondering about rehearsal schedule in a usual week in the semester, and about how long the process for each show is. - Anonymous

Rehearsal Hours are 6:30-10:30 Sunday-Thursday, but any actor can only be called for a maximum of 15 hours in a week. The show process is typically around 8 weeks of rehearsal.

Question: Are there auditions for the pit or only singers/actors? - Anonymous

Usually we don't audition for our pit, we just take volunteers who feel up to the task! If you are interested in playing in a pit for either musical this semester, I would suggest going to tech interviews instead of auditions so that you can sit down with the producer to introduce yourself, tell them about your instrument, and they can talk to you about what you can expect from tech week. I hope I'll see you there!

How to Get Involved

Performers – We hold auditions for our shows at the start of each semester. Auditions are laid back, and performers of any experience level are more than welcome. Auditions for our fall musical will take place on September 2-3. Send an email to pennplayers@gmail.com or tace.chair@gmail.com for more information! Can't wait to see you there!

Techies – Come out to tech interviews! These are very low-key interviews where you get to talk with our lovely tech team about your passion for theatre tech! We have both design and crew positions across all facets of tech, and people of any experience level are welcome. Interviews will take place on September 10-11 from 6:30-10:30 pm in the Platt Student Performing Arts House Lobby. Looking forward to creating magic together!
