Description

We are the undergraduate division of Student Hospice Organization of Penn (SHOOP), and are a student group at the University of Pennsylvania. We strive to serve hospice patients in the Philadelphia area and raise awareness through campus wide events.

"I am a nursing student at Penn and I find it really rewarding to talk with hospice patients and provide companionship and support, my presence for the patients taught me a lot about the role of spirituality in medicine and exposed me to a diverse healthcare team of physicians, chaplains, and social workers. I loved it!"

"I am a pre-med student and I was looking for clinical volunteering opportunity and I chose to be part of SHOOP because it's the only club where you can directly interact with patients while closely observing healthcare team dynamics."

"Throughout the year at SHOOP, I enjoyed making Christmas and Valentine's Day cards and delivering them to the hospice patients. I also enjoyed fundraising and volunteering in Camp Erin, which is a camp helping children, who have lost a loved one, to deal with and process their grief. All SHOOP's volunteering is eye-opening as you witness people's resilience in the face of extraordinary loss."

Question: Do you have plans for in-person clinical volunteering this Spring 2021? - Anonymous
Yes and no. In some capacity we would like to be more involved this semester than last semester, but currently volunteers are not able to visit at the in-patient hospice unit. However, we do have plans to participate in other ways such as making cards and baking for the patients.

Question: Are you accepting new members currently? - Anonymous
Yes! At all times you can get involved in volunteering. We serve as a congretation of information for student hospice volunteers and intermediary with the volunteer coordinators. Although this semester we will have limited engagement, we encourage you to get started and learn about volunteering so that you can participate in that in the future.
