In the vibrant yet demanding world of Penn's undergraduate experience, mental health often remains a silent struggle, overshadowed by academic pressures and societal expectations. With the goal of fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, we present "Speak Up at Penn," a student-driven organization dedicated to addressing the mental health concerns of our diverse student body.
At "Speak Up at Penn," we believe that open dialogue and data-driven insights are essential for improving mental health support at Penn. Through periodic anonymous surveys, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of the mental health landscape among undergraduates, aim to illuminate the challenges faced by our peers. This data will serve as the foundation for our student advocacy efforts, guiding us in shaping proposals and initiatives that effectively address the unique mental health needs of our student body. All of the data we collect will be shared on social media, CAPS, and the Task Force on Student Psychological Health and Welfare's to help encourage increased mental health investments and create a direct communication between students and admistrative leaders who have the power to improve mental health facilities.
Our commitment to mental health extends beyond data collection and advocacy. We envision a Penn campus where mental health is openly discussed in larger groups, where students feel empowered to ask for advice and support from their peers. The mental health circles we plan to design will allow students to hang out with their fellow classmates, bond over snacks, and talk all things mental health in a more socially oriented manner. To achieve further achieve our vision, we will host a series of mental health events, workshops, and guest lectures, providing students with the knowledge they need to navigate their mental well-being and a potential mental health related career.
The current absence of a mental health student or dedicated to mental health research and evidence based reform on campus highlights the pressing need for "Speak Up at Penn." We envision our organization as a safe space for students to share their experiences, advocate for change, and access personalized support. With the approval of the Office of Student Affairs, we can bridge the gap in mental health support at Penn, creating a more inclusive and supportive campus community.
Together, we can foster a Penn environment where mental health is prioritized, where students feel empowered to speak up, and where everyone has access to the support they need to thrive. Join us in making "Speak Up at Penn" a reality.
