10% of Philadelphia citizens are uninsured. Nearly 50% of low income and unemployed families pay out-of-pocket more than they can afford for medical care. This is widely attributed to rising drug prices, inequitable medicaid requirements, flawed health insurance legislation, and a difficult application process. SUMA is student run organization at Penn that works directly with uninsured low income families and leads free local workshops to streamline the Medicaid registration process. Through our online public health campaigns and local government advocacy, we hope to spread awareness and create tangible change within the Philadelphia Department of Public Health policies. We believe that all American citizens should have access to inexpensive and dependable medical coverage.
