The Displaced Dispatch encapsulates what it means to be a global citizen actively fighting for human rights. This club will connect people that are being forcefully displaced from their homes and sent to Philadelphia with people of the same nationality/that speak the same language at Penn. Through this initiation concerned students at all schools of Penn (Undergraduates/Graduates) will be able to connect with either struggling parents or children and provide them with support in one of three ways.
- Financial Literacy Sector:
This program aims to provide basic financial knowledge and skills that will be useful in personal financing and future financial decisions. Student volunteers will create a curriculum/provide consulting to aid refugees and displaced peoples in navigating the financial system in the United States to achieve financial independence and meet their future goals. Brochures and slide decks will be shared with refugees and displaced peoples created by the volunteers during volunteering sessions. Leadership opportunities are open/available.
2. Basic English Language Writing Tutor Sector:
This program will aid both adults and children to improve their writing abilities to achieve success in the work field and in school. Volunteers will provide adults with the opportunity for resume and cover letter workshops and reviews for potential job positions. Children and teenagers will have writing tutors to proofread and restructure essays for college/high school applications and class writing assignments. Younger children (younger elementary) will be taught how to write through simple activities and will have the opportunity to read with a tutor buddy to increase reading fluency. The overall goal of this sector will be to increase English proficiency that will lead to increased opportunities. Providing children a steady education during the unknown time period of displacement is one that is imperative for their development and future. A curriculum that is on par with what they would have been learning in school is vital to continue a bit of normalcy during their struggling times. Leadership opportunities are open/available.
3. Health Literacy Sector:
The health literacy sector is a student-run volunteership that aims to promote health education and awareness within the community. The sector is made up of volunteers who are interested in the field of public health and clinical screening. Through this sector students will create accurate and reliable health information to share with the refugee community. Students will organize workshops, presentations, and health screenings to educate and empower individuals to take control of their own health. This sector will also have clinical opportunities to provide health services to those in need. Leadership opportunities are open/available.
