West Philly Swingers is UPenn's official swing dancing troupe! We are both a social and a performance group, dancing mainly Lindy Hop and West Coast Swing. Sign up for notifications on workshops, social events, and other fun stuff here!

Question: Hey! I'm a newbie swinger myself (I can do the basic steps and turns) and I'm not really up to the whole competitive aspect of the swing dancing. Is there any way I can be involved on simply a social dancing level? Also, will there be any sort of dancing this semester given Penn's fall plans? I'd completely understand if not due to the risks posed by social dancing. The contra dance community has had to go virtual since the pandemic and so has the Philly swing dance community. - Maryelizabeth Greeley
Hi friend! Thanks so much for reaching out, we're so glad to hear from you! :-) In response to your question, we're not a competition-based dance troupe—we have a choreographed show each semester, but we're primarily a social dance group (emphasis on the social; we've got big family vibes) so we'd be happy to have you join as a member, or just dance with you sometime! And unfortunately, due to the nature of partner dancing, social dancing is going to be on pause for the foreseeable future. We aren't accepting new members this semester, but please do stay in touch via our social media (@westphillyswingers on FB and @westphillyswing on IG) to be updated. However, we will still be having virtual weekly lessons/open social events—please reach out to us directly if you would be interested in participating! Thanks so much and see you soon! <3

How to Get Involved

[In non-COVID circumstances] Members are expected to be active both within the group on campus as well as within the overall Philly swing scene. This includes 1-2 hours of lessons a week, 2-3 hours of rehearsals a week, and 3 hours of social dancing a month.
