In this era of technology, social media has promoted toxic beauty standards among young people, causing college-age students to undergo anti-aging plastic surgery such as botox, facelifts, and liposuction. As a result of these unhealthy societal expectations, individuals forget that the process of aging is natural and beautiful. In an individualistic world that focuses almost entirely on the self, many people forget to appreciate the natural process of life. The mission of Grandpas@Penn is to challenge and de-stigmatize perceptions of aging within the Penn student body. Through exposure to narratives, experiences, and perspectives associated with later stages of life, we aim to help students reflect on aging as a process that can be deeply human. We host events for Penn students to connect with one another and realize that growing old is not something to fear, but a natural stage of life with many positive aspects.
