Neuroscience Society strives to provide a forum of discussion for today’s rapidly developing field of neuroscience. We seek to bring together undergraduate and graduate students who share an avid interest in learning about the human brain and nervous system, potential academic and clinical careers in the field of neuroscience, and neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
As a club, we work towards developing a community of shared passion and support, making sure that our meetings produce a light, welcoming atmosphere while continuing to be academic. Our members also prioritize collaboration while seeking new opportunities of learning, whether it be through discussing articles in our Research Committee, ending in our yearly Research Committee Expo; investigating the intersection of neuroscience and business in our Consulting Committee; or contributing to our very own Neuroscience Society Journal under the Journal Committee. We want to share our love of neuroscience with both Penn’s campus and the greater Philadelphia community, and we invite you to join us in our mission!

Neuroscience Society at Penn

All things brain-related!

Penn Neuroscience Society was one of my first introductions to the Penn community and finding similar passionate, spirited people in the field of Neuroscience. Even through my involvement in PNS as a general board member, the community was a large contributor to my burgeoning interest in the field of research and neurology. The opportunities to receive help from board members offering guidance on classes and career prospects, especially as a freshman, was gratifying. Meetings also cultivated a genuine atmosphere, as they were a mix of informative lectures from prominent researchers and professors, but also a space to meet new people and participate in lively activities, like building candy neurons. Penn Neuroscience Society serves as a place that not only ensures members feel welcomed, but fosters intrigue and excitement in the ever-growing study of neuroscience.

My experience being a part of research committee was my way of getting introduced to Penn and its community during my freshman year. Being able to meet each week with a similar group of people and discussing academic topics of neuroscience and recent breakthroughs in the field were enlightening — topics I never imagined could have a neuroscience intersection were discussed, such as how game theory is utilized in marketing, how neuroscience informs economic policy, and how philosophy can inform neuroscience ethics. We even concluded the year with being able to present our own interests and research findings through the annual Research Expo, where Dr. Virginia Lee, one of the world’s leading neuroscientists both gave a stellar presentation and evaluated our posters. I have made so many friends the past year in Research Committee that will last over my time at Penn, and I appreciate PNS for giving me the opportunity to explore the field of neuroscience and help me figure out what my future career path may look like.

Penn Neuroscience Society is club with so much heart, so much passion, so much depth. When you join the community, it feels less like a club, but like a family. Whether it's GBMs, our three committees, or any other initiative that PNS carries out, there is always a welcoming feeling that makes you feel comfortable in that space. Furthermore, PNS is also a organization that values learning and growth. In GBMs, exploring the nervous system and it's pathways and mechanisms is made easy through interactive activities. In our research, journal, and consulting committees, you can learn about anything in neuroscience with a group of similarly passionate individuals through discussions and literature reading. In their physician shadowing events, students get to see what life could be like as a neurosurgeon or researcher in neuroscience. Lastly, what makes PNS unique to any other neuroscience organization on campus is that it is all inclusive. Whether you are pre-med or not, a neuroscience major or not, it doesn't matter. Neuroscience is a broadening field, forming burgeoning relationships with other areas such as law, marketing, economics, psychology, AI, and linguistics. If you have ever been curious about the brain, mind, or even just the shower thoughts that catch you off guard once in a while, PNS is for you.
