Special Olympics defines itself as "a global movement that unleashes the human spirit every day around the world through the transformative power and joy of sport". Our student organization at the University of Pennsylvania is just one part of the state, national, and international Special Olympics community that works to serve this mission. Our chapter has two primary focuses. Namely, we provide sports competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities to foster courage, good health, and friendship among athletes, unified partners, and volunteers. Equally as important, we strive to reduce the stigma surrounding intellectual disabilities and spread a message of unity, justice, and inclusion for all people through various educational events.

Penn Special Olympics

Striving to spread unity, justice, and inclusion through sport and competition

I have really enjoyed getting involved in PSO. I did Special Olympics stuff in high school, and coming to Penn I knew it was something I still wanted to be involved in. Everyone involved is very passionate about it. The Young Athletes Coaching on the weekend is one of my favorite parts; every weekend we spend about 2.5 hours coaching and it is very rewarding.

PSO has been a great experience for me. I did something similar in high school, but that is not mandatory to be involved. The club has students from all four schools at Penn and everyone loves what we do. I like PSO as well because it does not take up so much of my time, but I still feel like an active, contributing member. Everyone in the club is involved in organizing events and  making sure things run smoothly
