Club Mission

Urban Gun Violence Prevention at Penn is a student run group that aims to bring together like minded students, who believe in the importance of curbing urban gun violence, and who believe in the importance of addressing the effects of gun violence on the mental health of urban community members. Many urban cities are highly concentrated by marginalized minority populations, and there are a host of structural inequities that correspond with that reality. It is important that together, UGVP's members conduct a series of community service projects that aim to support low income community members as research shows a strong correlation to socioeconomic status and gun violence prevalence, educate youth about the importance of decreasing gun violence in their cities, as well as coming up with impactful interventions to support those who have been either directly or indirectly affected by gun violence in urban areas. In addition, the club will serve as a space for people to voice their opinions on the issue of urban gun violence, talk about current events surrounding this issue, and brainstorm ideas to help combat urban gun violence in America, and in Philadelphia, and take appropriate action. This club is important because I am from Philadelphia myself, and have experienced the effects of gun violence first hand— this isn’t a unique reality to me as many Philadelphians experience this and need assistance. Penn students are uniquely situated to help–– so we should.
